Thus far, with nuclear power units are operating as well as 64 under construction, nuclear power has played an important role in world’s energy system. However, the threats of nuclear power exist and accidents have truly happened. Hence, Belgium calls for an international concern on nuclear using security. As a worldwide focus issue, the United Nations, for the benefit of all human beings, has been long making efforts in the secure use of nuclear power. Aiming to safe guard world peace, the United Nations has established the International Atomic Energy Agency as well as other institutions. Treaties, such as Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (Mar/1970) and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (Sep/1996), has provided a relatively safe circumstance internationally. The Kingdom of Belgium, as one of the founding countries of the European Union, has been long contriving to prevent the world peace from the potential perniciousness of using nuclear power. Although Belgium has seven nuclear reactors generating about half of our country’s electricity, the Belgian Senate approved the Federal Act of 31 January 2003, which prohibited the building of new nuclear power plants and limited the operating lives of existing ones to 40 years (to 2014-2025). Intended to reduce the energy reliance of nuclear power, Belgium strives to develop renewable energy. Belgium highly affirms the necessity of improving the security protection of nuclear power using, and has following suggestions: Belgium appeals to enhancing the investigation of nuclear power exploitation qualification. Belgium also believes that Improvement of the enforcement capability of IAEA to strengthen the ability of inspection is needed. Any actions about nuclear power should be carried out under the supervision of IAEA. Our country hopes that the transport and storage of the original material of nuclear power should be under supervised. Further, a high standard of the qualification on nuclear power should be formulated. Our country reminds the international standards like BSS, NUSS and RADWASS. Belgium. Although Belgium prohibits the building of new nuclear power plants, our country agree with the technical sharing on nuclear power. However, Belgium firmly calls for the exploitation of new energy before nuclear power.
